The Pull Toward What’s Next

It’s the middle of July—how is that even possible? There is still plenty of summer left, and yet I can already feel the pressure to start looking ahead to back-to-school season, fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

That push to be fully present as a mom—to enjoy every summer moment with my daughter—is still strong. But the outside reminders keep coming, constantly nudging us toward whatever is next:

·         Buy the school supplies now before they’re gone.

·         Start thinking about Halloween.

·         Get ready for the holidays.

Those messages are everywhere, especially in the media, and they make it hard to simply stay in the moment. Or is that just me?

The Business Owner Side of Me

As a small business owner, I know I need to start planning and posting for back-to-school and holiday events. If I don’t, I’ll quickly feel lost and behind.

But that constant planning has left me exhausted, and sometimes it makes being present feel even harder.

The Mom Side of Me

So yes, as a business owner, I will begin posting about future events. But as a mom, I am going to try—definitely not perfectly—to stay in the moment.

Here’s to the lemonade stands, backyard water play, and trips to Andy’s for frozen custard that are still waiting in our immediate future.

And here’s to accepting the messy house and the mounds of laundry I cannot seem to fit into the schedule for the rest of the summer—because something has to give.
